A 18 bus commercial bus crashed into a shop at Challenge Market in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Saturday after its brakes reportedly failed, throwing traders and passers-by into a brief panic.
Eyewitnesses, speaking to Radio Kwara via its verified Facebook page, said the driver lost control when the brakes failed, causing the bus to veer off the road and slam into a shop within the busy market.
What could have been a far worse outcome was averted by a perimeter fence surrounding the market area, which absorbed much of the impact and stopped the bus from pushing further into the crowded space. One eyewitness described the fence as a critical safety barrier that limited the damage and protected lives in the densely populated area.
Property was damaged in the crash, but no injuries or deaths had been reported at the time of filing.
The incident has drawn fresh attention to the condition of commercial vehicles plying Kwara's roads, with residents and transport stakeholders renewing calls for operators to prioritise regular maintenance, particularly of braking systems to prevent similar accidents in the future.
